Picture this: you are cruising up country in your Toyota Vitz, and suddenly, your vehicle loses power and stalls. You turn it on again, and the engine splutters – you notice the engine backfire, and when you check your dash, there’s a check engine light. These are signs and symptoms of a faulty Toyota Vitz idle air control valve. Still, you properly need to diagnose your vehicle with an OBDII scanner to ascertain the problem.

What is a Toyota Vitz Idle Control Valve?

The idle air control valve on your Toyota Vitz is an engine management component found in many road-going vehicles (not just the Toyota Vitz) in one form or another. This component’s primary function is to regulate your vehicle’s engine idle speed, increasing and decreasing it when necessary to keep up with its operating conditions.

You will notice that most vehicle idle control valves are motorized valves or motors mounted on the car’s intake manifold. Your Toyota Vitz’s engine control module usually controls this valve or motor, which generally adjusts the idle speed based on parameters such as electrical system load and engine temperature.

If your Toyota Vitz has a faulty idle control valve, it will experience all sorts of issues, and in some rare cases, you might not be able to drive it. Usually, a faulty or failing idle control valve will throw off some symptoms that will alert the vehicle owner of a potential problem. Fortunately for you, we have outlined the most common issues.

How Does the Toyota Vitz Idle Control Valve Work?

The speed of the engine refers to the number of revolutions it makes in a minute. This is normally known as the RPM. Therefore, your vehicle’s current operating conditions will determine if the idle control valve will decrease or increase the RPM in your engine.

Picture this: if your car has a heavy load or heats up quickly, your Toyota Vitz idle control valve will work to increase or decrease the RPM respectively. This gives the engine a chance to handle the heavy load on your car or cool down when it gets hot.

The ECU (Engine control unit) is responsible for managing the idle air control valve. Therefore, when the ECU receives information that there is a heavy load or high temperature, it uses the information relayed to make adjustments to the idle control valve.

Signs and Symptoms of a Faulty or Bad Idle Air Control Valve

Your Toyota Vitz will alert you to a faulty idle air control valve in several ways. However, it’s essential to understand that the symptoms are not always 100% accurate, and the idle issues might persist even if you have cleaned, inspected, and replaced the valve due to more significant problems in your engine.

Starting issues

If your engine is not getting the required amount of air, it might not start or have difficulty starting. One common issue with a challenging start is a faulty idle control valve.

Poor or rough idle

In case the source of air getting into the engine is inconsistent, the driver will be able to notice some hesitation or glugging. A revving and dying sound will also be produced. At that point, the driver will know there is a problem.

The vehicle starts and suddenly dies.

In case your idle air control valve has an issue and occasionally works during certain parts of its cycle, the car will start dying prematurely in its cycle.

Backfires

When your engine lacks the right amount of air, the fuel-to-air ratio is thrown off, which causes some fuel to remain after the spark. When the remaining fuel makes its way through the system, it could lead to a backfire.

Check engine light

A check engine light is perhaps the most gut-wrenching experience any car owner can experience. While a check engine can be due to many issues, when the idle control valve is faulty, it will also come on. To be sure, you’ll need to get an OBD II scanner to scan the codes to determine if, indeed, your idle air control valve is faulty.

A faulty idle control valve will throw off several symptoms that the vehicle owner will immediately be aware of in normal circumstances.

If your car is experiencing any of the issues discussed or you suspect that your idle control valve might be faulty, contact a professional mechanic to determine if you require an IAC valve replacement.
