There have been many automotive events over the weekend. It seems the hype in Kenya’s automotive scene picked up after South Africa’s track legend Boss TTRS shamelessly annihilated every single Kenyan contender in Nyahururu except for a bike boy. This weekend, X-famous auto dealer Khalif Kairo treated us to some European offroading, proving his Porsche Cayenne wasn’t just a pavement princess but a water buffalo when it came to wadding through Kenya’s red-soiled water baths.
Kenya’s overlanding automotive scene has been picking up. Interestingly, they are the same old faces with new toys. It’s a harsh reminder to anyone that age catches up—and at one point or another, you’ll throw in the towel for braver, more versatile new kids on the block.
When you can no longer keep up with the fastest – you retire to the junkyard and fix up a contraption to take you away into the wilderness where you can reminisce on the old Kiambu Ring days.
I’m sorry to say this – it ‘might’ be a sorry excuse for a bunch of millennials to take their minds off the fast lane and wallow in pity about their hay days. They are responsible parents, after all, and getting into some wild outback escapades is less frowned upon than meeting up with carefree hooligans for some wild ‘Underground Street Legends of Nairobi,’ night racing fury – we have city cameras, after all.
Wow! That was a wild detour. I must have issues!
Well, Khalif Kairo tackled the mud pits somewhere on the outskirts of Nairobi in his beloved Porsche Cayenne. Initially, when he started posting images of his weekend offroading trips – skeptics were quick to paint a grim aftermath of an ill-fated experience with his European luxury SUV. Still, when he was captured plowing through the muddy pits, the negative commentary went into limbo.
I must admit, watching the Porsche Cayenne effortlessly maneuver through the mud where a Land Cruiser failed really caught me by surprise. But the Cayenne is German engineering at its best, and a graceful performance where others failed is always expected.
After conquering the mud pits, the young car dealer drove his Porsche Cayenne back to the city, donning its battle cars in the form of a new muddy tan. He posted a video proving naysayers wrong that his luxury SUV didn’t suffer any impacts after the impressive offroading performance. If anything, it did not have any error codes on the dash.
“We are done with the excursion. I’m headed to a car wash. My wheels are full of mud, ata ime-mess balance ya gari, my steering wheel is shaking because my wheels are just full of mud. But look at the cockpit. Not a single error,” Kairo revealed.
