There’s been a lot of hype among the Eldoret car enthusiast community over the just concluded Moi University Mass Auction that took place on 23rd May. It was a fascinating showdown as prospective buyers traveled far and wide to win the bids. The main attraction was a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado U120. The auction also featured several other vehicles, including a Nissan X-trail, Suzuki Vitara, two Nissan Urvans, a Toyota Coaster, and a couple of University buses.
Well, you’d expect a lot of the hype to be on the Prado, but the most interesting bit of the auction was when the bidders knocked heads for the Massey Furgerson tractor and the University buses. The competition was stiff, briefly turning into a dramatic outbidding competition.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado U120 went under the hammer for KES 1.5 million (reserved at KES 1 million), with two bidders battling it out and the last offer going to a young gentleman. The spectators felt the losing bidder was up to something, moving the winning bid by KES 200,000 after the winner had already outclassed most of his competition. We are glad the winner got a fair fight, even though he’ll sleep tonight knowing his Toyota Land Cruiser could have been a little cheaper.
Uasin Gishu is the home of farmers, and as you would have expected, the majority of the bidders came here for the tractors (two Massey Furgersons), and the competition was stiff. The first tractor, believed to be in great condition, sold for a whopping KES 1.95 million (KES 800K reserved)—the older tractor sold for KES 950K.
Two university buses were also on the auction list. The Isuzu bus sold for KES 970K, while the other (Nissan UD) went under the hammer for KES 2.160 million. The Nissan UD bus was the second most contested item in this auction—a two-bull race between two older gentlemen.
The Toyota Coaster minivan sold for KES 470,000. It was won by a Catholic nun. The classic Ford Firefighter wasn’t sold. It didn’t have a Kenyan registration, and most bidders avoided it. It would make a good art piece in a fancy restaurant or urban garage/ repair shop.
