If you live outside Nairobi in small cities in Kenya like Kisumu, Eldoret, Meru, and Kericho, there’s nothing much to do over the weekend except hang around family and friends. It’s either that—or joining a groupie of merry-makers and drinking yourself silly from Friday to Monday morning. That’s where getting a hobby comes in.
For most car enthusiasts, driving through lonely country roads in small towns is the perfect escape. In Eldoret, going to the Mile Tisa truck is a mini-journey bundled up in a therapeutic experience.
About 30 kilometers away from Eldoret through A104 (Uganda Road) or some 50 kilometers via the scenic Eldoret bypass (highly recommended), a drive to this location allows you to clear your mind while testing the limits of your car or bike.
I’ve met a couple of bikers at the Mile Tisa truck stop, but last weekend was the first time I met a biker with a unique rig. The owner of this epic bike, Edward, like me, spends some of his weekends doing what he loves most—adventuring the outskirts of the city.
He’s been an avid rider for the last four years and has been enjoying the journey every step of the way (not without a few burns and bruises).
I don’t have much experience riding bikes, but I’ve always dreamt of owning a Yamaha Motorcross bike. I love touring the unbeaten path, and riding a bike gives you the perfect vantage point of nature. You can also easily maneuver through Murram roads and experience the country’s beauty without breaking the bank.
Edward’s bike is a Honda Steed 600. It runs on a 600cc engine and sounds better than most cars on a muffler-delete. Its stretched-out frame is also perfect for long rides, and I believe you can go longer distances without feeling overwhelmed.
The Honda Steed 600 is quite a fascinating bike. It was developed between 2001 and 2004. It runs on a 4-stroke 52-degree V-Twin engine mated to a 4-speed transmission capable of 41 hp and 51 Nm of torque.
We had a short chat before it threatened to rain, and Edd had to leave. But not before sharing his amazing journey into the world of biking. I don’t wish to spell that out here, but I’d rather you enjoy it raw from the video below. Here’s a short clip of our interaction.
