Most people don’t think much of a Toyota Probox. If anything, most Kenyans think of them as workhorses that are best for businessmen and farmers. If it’s not hauling Khat from Meru, it’s hauling people in Kisii County, complete with enough trunk space to fit five school kids. That last bit was in bad taste, but ‘tembea Kenya ujionee.’
Overlanding has become a big thing in Kenya since the pandemic. Car enthusiasts have discovered that their thrill for everything auto doesn’t have to be on Kenyan highways pushing speed limits—but also chasing sunsets.
But overlanding, like performance cars, is not a cheap hobby. Traveling on the unbeaten path requires hardy vehicles with high clearances to counter the torrid conditions in the bush. So far, the Mitsubishi Pajeros, Land Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, and Suzukis make perfect choices – but did you know you can go overlanding with a Probox?
The Toyota Probox is a hardy car, no doubt. It’s a Toyota Corolla DX reincarnate, but this time, it is indestructible, reliable, and super-efficient.
Well-known Nakuru-based Social Media Influencer Moseax recently went on a road trip and came across a one-of-a-kind Toyota Probox. It was a 4WD variant built for the ultimate African overlanding experience.
“His name is Jeremy, and he is a Mzungu guy, and is using a Probox to travel across Africa. On top there, he has already installed camping gear,” Moseax revealed in a Facebook video.
This car has not only redefined the Probox’s capabilities but also broken into unknown territory and completed an awe-inspiring African expedition. According to the influencer, the car has traveled across several African countries and has the decals to prove it.
“He has done Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi. These other flags, i don’t know them well. But he has done almost half of Africa,” Moseax said.
It’s not your average Toyota Probox 4WD. It also comes with extras, including solar panels on the bonnet and roof. It has been fitted with a snorkel at the front and off-roading tires for those water-wadding situations during a safari.
At the top, the owner had built an overhead camper perfect for camping in the wilderness where wild animals could pounce without notice. This Toyota Probox also comes with a ton of accessories, including a burner and fridge—you can’t get take-out in the Mara.
The owner didn’t get to talk about his car, but the influencer promised to share his socials. Luckily, we will have time to reach out and do an in-depth review of this amazing Overlanding Toyota Probox.
