Toyota Supra purists should brace up for another wave of antidepressant pills. The next generation of the Toyota Supra GR could likely be powered by a six-cylinder engine from… wait for it… Mazda!
Yes! You read that right. The automotive giant from the land of the rising sun is set to strengthen its partnership with Mazda on its next generation of the most popular tuner car of the 90s, the Toyota Supra.
The current generation of the Supra is powered by a turbocharged 3-liter inline-six (B58B30C) and a turbocharged 2-liter (B48B20) engine from BMW. Purists hoped to see a reincarnated version of the 2JZ on the Supra, especially after the success of the GR Yaris at rallies over the last few years.
Based on information from the Japanese Magazine BestCar, Toyota wants to use Mazda’s turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine on the Toyota Supra – the same engine powering the CX-60,70,80 and 90.
Mazda’s turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-6 engine produces 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque on the Mazda model it powers. The version powering the Supra will likely produce more power, given that the current Supra makes a whopping 382 hp from the BMW-sourced 3-liter inline-six engine.
There are rumors that the GR Supra could feature hybrid technology like its sibling, the Toyota Yaris GR Sport, but it is still unclear if the new model will have a manual transmission, CarSauce reported.
BestCar also highlighted that Mazda will release a follow-up to the RX-7, likely based on the Supra. I know what you are thinking. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this alliance became another Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ collaboration.
This may be a relief for Mazda performance aficionados, especially after the long-waited RX-7 successor was announced at the reveal of the RX-Vision concept ten years ago.
The current Toyota GR Supra running BMW Z4 internals will seize production in 2025 or 2026.
